When the average company is considering outsourcing they often think about the cost and time savings yielded by such a move. What they do not consider are the more subtle yet far reaching environmental benefits that outsourcing brings to the table.

Let us explain.

It all starts with the concept of power management. The term power management has come to stand for various computer components that automatically power down after a pre-set period of inactivity. And while it may not seem like much, this small feature can yield huge power savings. For example, a standard laptop computer consumes roughly 175 watts/hour when in use, but while in sleep mode that number drops to just 35 watts/hour. Multiply this type of savings across your organization and you can see how the savings would compound over time.

And, when you partner these numbers with the fact that the CO2 emissions from 15 computers are equivalent to that of a car you can see that you truly do have the power to make a huge impact!

But let’s take things one step further and translate those savings into dollars. You might be amazed at how saving energy can also saving you an amazing amount of money. Believe it or not, a company that runs roughly 300 computers has the power to shave anywhere from $40,000 to $70,000 per year off of their energy bills.

How?

If you multiply the given retail price of electricity at $14.95 per KW hour by the 1226.4 KW burned by those 300 computers then you would end up paying over $90,000 annually for power. This is assuming that all 300 computers are left running 24/7.

But if the company were to scale back, and only run their computers during the normal business hours of 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, then they are down to only 45 hours a week. And while that is a significant difference, you can take things even further than that! The latest statistics indicate that only 60% of those 45 hours are actually spent on the computer. Meaning that if power management were to be employed, then the savings could go even deeper.

$55,000X 0.73 = $40,152 (for non-working hours)

$55,000X 0.27 X 0.4 = $5,940 (for 40% idle time)

Total: $40,152+$5,940 = $46,092

Depending on whether the computers were powered on 100% of the time or 50% of the time, the savings could vary from $46k to $23k per year.
